A thick-walled cylinder vase with a vibrant core of ruby red glass heavily cased in an outer layer of thick clear crystal, designed by Alfredo Barbini for his own works, Vetreria Alfredo Barbini, Murano, c.1960.
The exterior is decorated a scavo - a technique whereby the vase is rolled in ashes and salts whilst still semi-molten to recreate the time-weathered look of excavated Roman glass.
In this instance the technique is employed to create a dense kaolin-white craquelure with an irregular dark horizontal band around the vase.
Bears engraved signature 'Barbini Murano' to the base.
