A pair (2) of scarce and striking small tumbler glasses designed by Gio Ponti for Venini, Murano, around 1946.
The glasses are decorated a canne (with glass canes) in a repeating sequence of green and blue against a clear ground.
Each glass was quite literally handmade - after the basic form of each glass was blown and the coloured canes applied they were not blown a second time, but rather they were pulled into shape manually with hand-tools, often lending the glasses a 'rusticated' look, with lopsided rims or irregular scallops, and a subtly ribbed textured.
As is common with small Venini drinkware, there is no acid-etched stamp and the base is finished with a rough snapped-off pontil mark.
